Dana is the Bacon!

Our dear friend Dana is moving to Peru for six months (or scarily maybe longer) to work in their Hospital doing family medicine and delivering babies here and there. Lucky Peru and bummer for us (me)! For those of you who don't know Dana, I think the most accurate way I could describe her is like bacon--everything is better with a little Dana (or best case scenario Dana & bacon). She is always willing to lend a hand, in for a laugh or give you a giant awesome Dana-hug. If you've never had a Dana Hug then you are really missing something. Just truck on out to Peru--she gives out hugs for free.

Dana is frowning while she reads this as she doesn't dig on the pork products, but it still remains true: Dana/bacon makes everything better!

Ah the infamous chicken leg. Dana came over one day so I could run a errand w/o the kids (did I mention she is always helping people out) and she brought some chicken she made. She a piece of it while she was here, but when she left, she forgot the chicken leg. She texted me immediately not to eat it and she'd be by for it later. The texts and calls continued for several days until she was able to return to my house for her going away party! Here is my one and only photo from this event--Dana and her chicken leg (reunited plays softly the background).

Sleep Over!

Rosie came over for the girl's first sleep over. It was crazy-fun. They ate, colored, built a tent, made a fish craft, played dress up like a fairy tale and I don't even know what else! Just like a good slumber party the girls stayed up forever late and giggled a LOT!

Now someone tell me if we have created a monster...Noli has been asking to have another sleep over and this weekend Rosie's brave parents are having Noli over!

Family Fort & More!

Our friends Kieth & Meg gave Noli & Mars a "family fort kit" which included some ropes, sheets & clothes pins. Noli has wrapped the living room so many times in ropes. This is the fort they (well Noli really) made recently.

Noli put on her pirate costume this morning and was singing "yo, ho, ho, a pirates life for me" When I asked to take a picture, this was her "I don't want to!" look.

Marlon managed to have a blow out while we were out, we only had Noli spare pants...this was the results. This is also Marlon's new trick. He is trying to do a pull up on the drawer.

Justin is taking Marlon for a spin on our Bilibo. Marlon does his little dance right at the end before disaster strikes....

Kure Beach 2011 Part A

Mel & Mike drove in with the kids from Missouri and Dad & Sherry flew in from Florida. We all traveled to the ocean--Kure Beach. We arrived on saturday and as soon as we could get the suitcases in the house and change clothes we headed out to the beach to check out the ocean.

The boys headed out hand in hand to face the waves.

We visited the docked battle ship the USS North Carolina. There were tons of interesting facts, none of which I can recall at this point. The boys were most interested in the guns and Grandpa showed them all how they would have worked.

We worked up a big appetite crawling around that ship so we stopped off at a diner. This was the single serving pancake stack Lukas ordered. There were "oooh" and "ahhhh"s all around.

Happy 1/2 birthday Mars!

Physical specs:
- Well, you haven't had your 6 month check up yet, so we're not sure. But at 4 months you were 16lb 9oz and about 75th percentile for weight.
- Hair is starting to come in more, but pretty light and not enough to comb yet.
- Blue eyes--still surprised
- Rolled front to back at 4 months and back to front at 5 months
- Almost sit up on your own
- Ticklish on your belly
- First and only consonant--ga

Sleeping:
- Started making it most of the way through the night by 3 months. Most of the time you will go from 7p to 6a now.
- Loved the miracle blanket, but we stopped that at about 5 months
- Quit the pacifier at night time last week.
- You have a new blue elephant sleeping buddy
- Prefer your side or stomach

Eating:
- Your skin didn't like Mom eating dairy, so she's off it
- 6-7 oz bottles at school

We celebrated some easter fun. Aunt Eileen & Uncle Sandy came down the weekend before. Aunt Eileen brought eggs and we had good times hiding and finding and hiding and finding the eggs. She also brought the materials for an easter bonnet which I'll have to find pictures of later...our camera battery died for the easter egg hunt.

No Hell? Hell No.

Rob Bell's new book, Love Wins, has stirred up quite a controversy with his universalist view that hell isn't a destination in the afterlife. While many pastors have taken up the counterargument to this heresy, I'm here to warn believers of a yet unmentioned implications of Bell's false teachings -- our pets are also in danger!

Bell is not the first to imply that our pets do not have to worry about hell. As far back as 1989, Disney was preaching this message: All Dogs Go to Heaven.

But Scripture is clear that unsaved dogs are going to hell for eternity:

Philippians 3:2 ESV "Look out for the dogs, look out for the evildoers, look out for those who mutilate the flesh."

Revelation 22:15 ESV "Outside are the dogs and sorcerers and the sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices falsehood."

Revelation 20:10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

A literal reading of these three separate passages, taken out of any other context, prove that our pets face a real hell in the afterlife. We cannot be duped into losing focus, into channeling our energy to improve the lives of pets that are suffering and dying in real life hells on earth. Jesus needs us to continue to debate and defend esoteric concepts of eternal punishment for any pets that don't know Him. How else will they know He loves them?

One of the vaccinations at work comes packed in dry ice. Generally I have a good time of disposing of it at work, but it dawned on me that my daughter might think it was cool too so I convinced the lab people to let me have the extras. It was pretty fun...Mars wasn't totally sure about it, but he always has a good time watching Noli.

Also Mars got a new hat for the upcoming Durham Bulls baseball game we go to every year for Justin's birthday.

The McDowells, Pardue and Trogdons got together for the inaugural beer brew. We made a scottish ale, well maybe...it is gurgling in the basement. Noli had to stay home from school today because she wasn't feeling so well, but we managed to celebrate anyway. Yesterday she made valentine's and crowns (well, why not?) using some stickers from Ganny.

Today she got a package from Gramby & Big Poppa and immediately put on her new outfit.

Marlon loves hanging out in his 'play gym' working on his baby skills.

Noli still loves to dress herself. One day she had an accident at school and got changed into her overalls. They were talking about occupations at school and she said when we got home "I am a chicken" By which I think she intended "I am a farmer" but I like the way she said it better.

Also despite it being Feb Noli still loves to wear her halloween clothes and even pulled out a christmas dress last week. Noli fashion is going to take off one day.

Noli sang "Happy Birthday To Mommy" during Marlon's 6:30 feeding. On the weekend Noli and Justin made me a cake while I slept in! Both are good birthday gifts! Noli tasted it for quality control. It was a yellow cake with a strawberry jam layer and chocolate frosting.

Fish CSA

We joined WalkingFish, a fish CSA (community supported agriculture). Every other week we get fresh seafood from the coast, but we never know what we are going to get. Last week it was oysters and clams, we'd never made those at home before. We broiled the oysters and made a garlic & butter sauce which was pretty good. We also cooked the clams in roasted garlic and shallots with tomatoes and white wine. Pretty good, but a little short of the restaurant rip off I was going for...

Jack Lalanne died today and while we weren't close, I did get an awesome juicer from my sister for my birthday. So I toasted Jack with my first juice. I know, the one on the left looks like beer, but that is unfiltered apple juice from just two apples. My favorite was the one of the right which was sort of a trash can deal...beet greens, carrot, little cucumber, orange and pear. If you've got a great juice recipe..send it on folks

Favorite new activity: Reading books herself. I probably haven't read her bedtime books in 2 weeks. She gets to "talk about it" instead of us. We don't really understand most of it, but there are books where she definitely remembers the actual plot. If she's reading near her bookshelf and we want to do something else, we have to "wait til I finished."

Kaleb's birthday is Jan 4th so we had a little celebration.

I was watching an interview with an actor and he said "Oh that was one of the things I most regret of 2010" and I thought "that is a great idea" ...I mean EVERYBODY (and I'm looking at you here, Justin) does Top 10 Lists, but what about the bottom of the barrel, so vastly neglected?

5. Buying Expensive Shoes over the Net Internationally Do you really need me to explain why this is a bad idea?

4. Not Winning Any of the NPR Trips During Their Eternal Fundraising Events and 'yes' I've entered them all

3. Not Telling off all the People who said stoopid things during my pregnancy: I mean when can you be forgiven more for being hormonal than pregnancy? If you haven't heard me complain about it, I must not have talked to you in many months. In fact, this deserves a sub list:

Top 3 Stoopid Things People Have Said:

a. The runner who said when I was 6 months pregnant "you should take up running, I think you would really like it. That is how I lost all my weight"
b. The daycare worker who said in my 8th month "Oh you ARE pregnant? I thought that was just the way you were shaped"
c. The guy when I was 8 months pregnant who said "How far overdue are you?"

2. Spilling gas in the brand new car: gotta say it was an accident, but I could have caused a perfectly good car to stink to high heaven for eternity. The guy at the detailer told me the only things he doesn't guarantee to get out are cat pee and gas.

1. Not getting the epidural sooner:--I had already been in labor 24 hours-ish by the time I got to the hospital. I assumed it would be like 2-3 more hours, I even called off one of my support guru from coming to the hospital because I KNEW it was going to be soon (also all the textbooks promised it would be soon--LIARS). Well 12 hours later Mars decides to make his fashionably late appearance. Thank god at 5:30 am the anesthesiologist was Johnny on the Spot with her needle...life got better quicker.

Things I don't Regret of 2010

5. Buying Cargo Pants I'm clearly not giving fashion advice here despite having watch another season of Project Runway. However these type pants are the best mom accessory ever due to the pocket for everything...burp cloth, pacifiers, shields, lanolin or I could even throw in an infant diaper for a super quick trip out. Yeah I might look like the Michelin Man from the waist down, but I was kinda used to that with pregnancy anyway.

4. The Persimmon Tree Justin got me a persimmon tree this year and it even managed to bare 6 fruit this year. People don't seem to love these trees because they make too much fruit, which drop on the ground and is messy--are you KIDDING me? Then pick the fruit and store it and eat it or give it away--they are totally yummy when ripe (watch someone eat an unripe one and you have some real entertainment on your hands) and really useful. Between the fig and persimmon I have 2 seasons of fruit...now what else can I plant?

3. The New Room We expanded our living space a bit (when I way "we" I mean "someone else"). It was a move Huck Finn would have been proud of that I got my sister and aunt to come to my house to paint and organize the whole deal once it was done too.

1. Not Joining Facebook Again--I know that I get an extra age spot every time I say that. I also admit that I lurk and look at things Justin filters out on his page...mostly photos, but seriously you've got to admit it is a complete and utter waste of time (much like keeping this antiquated blog). Here is a good example, I had a patient come into my office complaining of sleep problems. She was going to bed at a decent time, slept soundly but would awaken early at 4 every morning and felt fatigued to the point of falling asleep at her desk. After MUCH questioning she finally admitted she was setting her alarm for that time so she could play farmville. Why would you pay a copay to tell me that?

Why not throw this in as well? As some of you know I also name my birthdays. For one it sets an intention and also because I was born in Jan so it is a bit like a new years resolution or something. I had The Year of Health, The Year of Adventure, The Petrified Year (becoming a mom), The Revenge Of Higher Education... that sort of thing. This year is The Year of The Good Enough Mother vs. Two Kids. In this year we will find out just how much Dora one two year old can watch and just how much time Mars will spend in an infant carrier, johnny jump up or exersaucer.

Speaking of resolutions, I continue to try and fail at my baby resolution. With both births I decided I would start wearing lipstick. I mean it seems like a small accomplishable thing that I could do that seems more adult or Momish. I can manage it for about 7-10 days and not necessarily in a row either. I have NO idea why this is so hard for me. I don't even really think it is all that necessary, but I am really irritated that I can't seem to do it. I mean, how hard can it be if Sarah Palin does it every day with her bulldog?

We had some persimmons from our tree and made pancakes from them

1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon each salt
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon cardamom
1 cup milk
6 tablespoons Hachiya persimmon pulp (1-2 fruits)
1 egg
2 tablespoons melted butter

1. In a large bowl, whisk together dry stuff
2. In a medium bowl, combine milk, persimmon pulp, egg and melted butter.
3. Make a well in the dry ingredients and pour in the wet ones, stirring until mixture is mostly smooth, but still has a few clumps.
4. Pour into a skillet, flip cook until done and serve with butter & maple syrup (actually I thought they were sweet enough without syrup, but suit yourself).

So we went in today for his "2 week" check up (actually only been 10 days), was hoping he was back up to his birth weight (8 pounds, 14 oz) after his discharge from the hospital. It took Noli a little over 3 weeks to get back to her birth weight. Well they weighed him in at NINE pounds SEVEN oz. Holy Crow! I did a double take and made her weigh him twice. Our provider asked if I was eating straight butter.

Fixer Upper

My sister Melody came into town for a visit, well really it was to do some manual labor. For some reason my Aunt Eileen from VA decided to drive all the way down and add her back to the manual labor as well! Clearly neither understand the definition of vacation very well. Mel, Aunt Eileen and Justin painted, cleaned, organized, hung curtains and did all manner of heavy lifting. Even Noli played with tools and sorted her tools onto the new organizational shelf. I was allowed to sit in the chair mostly and occasionally cook or screw a bolt into the crib. I did occasionally feed them. In fact, I had a fancy cake made for Mel (and Uncle Sandy contributed a fantastic pie). Mel's response to her cake was to stick her finger right on in there and taste on sight. I will put up photos of the new reorganized rooms.

We had a writing spider on our porch this year and since then Noli has liked to talk about spiders. We decided to make a little craft out of left over bottle caps. Noli really enjoyed putting the eyes on our spiders. Some got just one, some got 5 or 6 and one sad one wasn't allowed any eyes.

This not is intended for my dear durham friends who need to eat. In my current state, I've been just slightly obsessed with food. I'm not into sharing unless it is off your plate, but I will tell you where to go get your own.

First something new from today: Don's Italian Ices. He is a new addition to Durham mobile food place. He makes fresh Italian ices, many of them sourced with local ingredients or organic ingredients. He is happy to talk all about it while he gives you samples. I had the very fantastic tart cherry vanilla flavor at the farmers market today. I should have tried the organic Kalawi peach just to round out the crazies, but I didn't notice that offering until I was wafting away. For 2 bucks for generous portion in a somewhat precarious cup, this is the best way to cool down. He is at the market on wed/sat. Apparently he is also hanging out in the evenings with the Bulkogi Korean mobile place (Keith and Megan--have you tried it yet?) in the wachovia parking lot or with Only Burger at Sam's Quik Shop.

Kings Sandwich Shop which opened in after WWII and closed in 2007 is now reopened and up to code. It has a small burger/hotdog/milkshake menu (fresh spicy black bean burger and veggie dog too). It isn't local organic meat so justin will be enjoying the veggie options (not the braut boiled in beer and covered in pulled pork--that might kill a person anyway), but they do grind it themselves. They also have the elusive shaved ice to accompany their drink, I am talking fresh squeezed lemonade. One of my fav quotes about this place is from Bull City Rising where on Durhamite said "This is to me" Awww, how nice. Go and get your fatty meat fill (or feel all pious about eating their veggie options).

Thirdly my next food "goal" is to finally hit the Pinhook on Sunday lunch brunch for the vegan meal offered on the first sunday of the month ( next one 9/5/10). I think I would like anything from cooks that call themselves the Fiction Kitchen.

*Devouring- Yogurt is your favorite. Other favorites are apple sauce and cereal. A little peer pressure from another kid will increase the amount and variety you eat. You can feed yourself with a spoon and fork and can drink from a cup or straw.

*Mobility- Running and “jumping” (though not really). You can get up and down stairs holding the wall or our hand.

Happy Birthday to Noli last Monday. Noli did manage to dive bomb a sunshine cake made by Mel. Icing was everywhere and I'm pretty sure there were several flashbulbs, but I didn't capture that moment. Noli loved opening the boxes and paper from her gifts and has spent the last several days playing with her new finds.

Goodwin Reunion

Noli and I traveled down to Georgia to see the Goodwin fam for a reunion. Everyone else had their camera out the whole time so I'm sure the whole thing is captured from one side to another. I turned 33 last month. The first thing I always think about when I hear that age is that that's how old Jesus was when he was crucified. I'm as old as Jesus made it to. Doesn't that ramp up the pressure to "do something" with my life? Regardless of your religious beliefs about Jesus, In 3 short years between the ages of 30 and 33 he changed the course of western civilization.

Other religious founders also had their epiphanies around their 30s. Paul apparently was also around 30 at his conversion on the road to Damascus. Buddha was 35 when he received enlightenment under the bodhi tree. Muhammad was visited by the angel Gabriel at age 40.

So this could be a big decade for me right? I'm excited to find out.

We got four inches of snow here on Friday, which is enough to close the whole place down through Sunday. We might not even be able to get out for work on Monday! The governor declared a state of emergency. We've got like 2 snow plows for the whole state, the south doesn't have too many boy scouts I guess. Anyway, we got out for a walk during the day with Noli. We were supposed to have a nice dinner out to celebrate my birthday. To our surprise, the place decided to open so we walked down to Revolution and had a great dinner!
